Questions to Ask When Interviewing at a Brokerage

You've completed your pre-licensing education, passed your Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) exams and you are on your way to becoming a licensed Alberta REALTOR®. But wait, you need to interview at a brokerage.

When starting out as a new REALTOR®, choosing the right brokerage can set the trajectory for your future success in the industry.  It's important to do your research and approach brokerage interviews with a set of well-thought-out questions that can help you make an informed decision.

When can I start interviewing at brokerages?

Pre-licensees can begin interviewing at brokerages at any time. It is actually recommended that you begin interviewing at brokerages before you are complete your pre-licensing education. Once you are complete your Fundamentals of Real Estate and Designation courses, you have six months to sign to a brokerage, so the sooner you get started, the better.

Questions New REALTORS® Should Ask During their Brokerage Interview

  • Does the brokerage offer support to new associates in their marketing and advertising decisions to keep them
    compliant?
  • Does the brokerage provide space for associates to meet with clients? Are there availability restrictions?
  • Does the brokerage have workspace or workstations available for associate use? Are there restrictions?
  • Approximately what percentage of brokerage associates are over & under 5 years in the business?
  • Does the brokerage operate in all designations, including property management?
  • Does the brokerage have policies about trading outside the local geographic area?
  • What types of insurance does the brokerage require and/or recommend for its associates?
  • How long has the brokerage been operating? How many associates are registered with the brokerage?
  • What are the brokerage policies on personal trades by associates?
  • Does the brokerage have options for new associates who are looking for mentorship?
  • If an associate chooses to leave the brokerage, what are the requisite timelines, costs, or restrictions?
  • Does the brokerage have a lead distribution system for associates? Is it free, paid, or both options available?
  • Do you follow common-law or designated agency brokerage
  • Do you have office meetings? How often? In person, online, or hybrid
  • What sales training or coaching is available to new associates? What are the associated costs?
  • Who is available to help new associates work through their first few contract? How is that support accessed?
  • What compensation plans are available in the brokerage? Do you recommend a specific plan for new associates?
